If you're responsible for workplace safety, one of the most important things you can do is make sure your team knows what to do in an emergency. First aid training is not just a legal requirement. It gives your staff the confidence to act when it matters.
Whether you're planning training for the first time or refreshing existing qualifications, here’s what your team will experience during first aid training, and why it’s worth doing properly.
Why First Aid in the Workplace Matters
Accidents and medical emergencies can happen anywhere. Having someone on-site who knows how to respond can make a big difference to the outcome.
Workplace first aid training helps your team:
Act quickly and confidently when someone becomes unwell or injured
Provide care until emergency services arrive
Use the workplace first aid kit effectively
Record incidents in line with regulations
Support a safer culture across the organisation
Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, all UK employers must provide adequate first aid equipment, facilities and training. What counts as "adequate" depends on the size and risk level of your workplace, which is why choosing the right training matters.
What Happens During the Training
Workplace first aid training is practical, hands-on and focused on real-life situations. The course is led by a qualified instructor and combines clear instruction with demonstrations and group activities.
Depending on your workplace needs, you’ll either complete an Emergency First Aid at Work course (one day) or a First Aid at Work course (three days). Both options are designed to meet the requirements set by the Health and Safety Executive.
You’ll learn how to:
Assess the situation and check for danger
Carry out a primary survey of the casualty
Perform CPR and use a defibrillator
Treat bleeding, burns, fractures and shock
Manage medical conditions such as seizures, asthma or allergic reactions
Keep proper records and report incidents
Use the workplace first aid kit safely and confidently
Everything is explained step by step in plain English. Training is active, so be prepared to take part, practise techniques and work through different emergency scenarios.
Preparing for the Course
No previous experience is required. The training is designed for ordinary people, not medical professionals. Everything is explained clearly and step by step.
To get the most out of the course, staff should wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes, as there will be plenty of moving around, kneeling and practising recovery techniques.
If anyone has a health condition or mobility limitation, it is best to let the trainer know in advance. Adjustments can usually be made so everyone can take part.
What Happens Afterwards
At the end of the course, there will be a short assessment to check understanding. This usually involves demonstrating core skills such as CPR and answering simple questions about emergency response.
Successful participants receive a certificate valid for three years. This confirms they have completed recognised workplace first aid training and are qualified to act as first aiders.
Many organisations arrange refresher training each year to keep knowledge fresh. Objective Health also offers requalification courses for staff whose certificates are due to expire.
Making the Most of Your Workplace First Aid Kit
Training also covers how to use and maintain your workplace first aid kit.
Having a kit is one thing, knowing how to use it is another.
Participants will learn how to:
Check stock levels and expiry dates
Understand the purpose of each item
Keep the kit accessible and ready for emergencies
Maintain hygiene when treating casualties
By the end of the course, your staff will be confident in using the equipment provided and in recognising when supplies need replacing.
Choosing the Right Course
The right course depends on your workplace. For a small, low-risk office, Emergency First Aid at Work may be sufficient. For a larger or higher-risk site, such as construction or manufacturing, the full First Aid at Work course is usually more appropriate.
If you are unsure which training you need, Objective Health can help assess your workplace risks and recommend the most suitable option.
